Day 32

On the Road to Anchorage
Cloudy skies and wind greeted us as we got ready to head out to Anchorage. All of the motorhomes had left, Robert was hooked up and ready to pull out as I went to back my pickup in to hitch up. Robert came running over and asked me to pull around to his truck because his battery was dead and he need a "jump." After several tries he finally got his truck started. The battery posts and clamps were heavily corroded and that was probably the culprit. We finally got out of the park on on the road to Anchorage about 9:30.
We made a brief stop about 40 miles south of Denali National Park to try to catch a final glimpse of Mt. McKinley. The closer we got to the pullout, the faster the clouds moved in to blot out the top of the mountain. We could see just the very top as we drove, but it was totally gone when we got to the pullout.
We journeyed another 50 miles before stopping at Denali State Park to view a military memorial.
The memorial consisted of concrete slabs 20 feet tall for each of the 5 services. Inscriptions on the slabs told of that particular branch's history in Alaska. Also displayed were plaques honoring military personnel who lost their lives in accidents in Alaska and plaques honoring congressional medal of honor winners.
After a short stop for lunch we journey on to Anchorage. We ran into Mel and Dot just north of Anchorage and we all stopped for ice cream. Um um good!
We got to the Gold RV park about 4:15 and got set up and ready for our stay here. We went to the social at 6:00 but left early to get the charcoal ready for our dinner.
Robert and Bet and Jenna and I got steaks at the Delta Reindeer Meat Market last week, and we decided tonight would be a good time for a steak dinner - beef not reindeer.
Tomorrow is another busy day. We have the morning free to grocery shop and clean the trailer, but in the afternoon we take a city tour of Anchorage and go to dinner and a movie in the evening. I'll tell you about that next time. Till then, Happy Trails.
By the way, be sure to check the blogs for the last two days. I inserted pictures of the animals we saw in Denali and pictures of the white water trip yesterday.
