Day 7
Since we didn't have electricity and since our battery was running low - which meant no heat - we decided to leave the Columbia Ice Fields parking lot about 7:40 A.M. The wagon master planned to leave at 9:00, so we were heading out ahead of him. Our plan was to go to Jasper (about 65 miles) and have breakfast. We had gone about 40 miles when we found a neat restaurant, gift shop, and lodge. We swung the RV around and into the parking lot there. What a nice breakfast we had - french toast, bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, coffee, coffee, coffee. (No electricity means no coffee!)
After breakfast we were driving down highway 93 when our wagonmaster came up behind us. He called out of his CB - "Adventure 12 (that's us), this is Adventure 1 (that's him). I am riding you bumper" I replied, "I copy that Adventure 1. Do you want by?" Before he could reply I came to a passing lane and pulled to the right. He immediately passed us and left us in a cloud of dust. I like to drive about 55 mph; he was going at least 70.
Shortly we came upon Athabaska Falls, a beautiful pair of waterfalls. As we were taking pictures, a hoarde of Japanese tourists flocked in and starting taking pictures. One walked up to Jenna, tapped her on the shoulder and told her to move because she wanted to "take picture." Needless to say, Jenna was less than pleased.
Tonight at the travel briefing she wanted to ask if we could have a moment of prayer for the "Jap" tourists. I suggested she wait for another day.
After the falls we went into Jasper for diesel before heading west to Valemount, British Columbia. The drive on highway 16 West was a fairly smooth and scenic trip. Snow capped mountains were to our south and rivers. lakes and streams followed us on both sides of the road. The rivers and streams are beautiful - lots of swiftly moving rater that is an amazing shade of green. The lakes are also amazing. They are clean, scenic, and look magnificent against the mountains with all of their trees. Canada is a very clean looking country - no litter, no junk cars or run-down houses, buildings, etc. Very tidy and beautiful.
We arrived the Valemount about 2:00 PST. We changed to the pacific time zone when we crossed into British Columbia. So far we have driven a little over 3000 miles. I totaled up the number of miles from the Ice Fields to Alaska and it was a little over 3000 miles. The highest we've paid for deisel has been $1.60 a liter - that figures to $5.96 a gallon!!! We still have 14 days in B.C. and Yukon Territory!
Our RV park is just below a row of mountains. It is currently 54 degrees with winds of 20-30 mph. The Caravan Adventure staff provided a bar-b-que dinner for us tonight - very good. Tomorrow, we drive 180 miles to Prince George. It is a large city where we will spend 2 days. Til next time - Happy Trails.
