June 3

Today was another long windy day! We left a great campsite in Loveland and headed for Buffalo, Wyoming. We drove 8 1/2 hours in stong winds from the northwest. Needless to say, gas mileage was horrible. We filled up south of Casper, Wyoming and the gauge indicated that we had enough to get to Buffalo - about 130 miles. The range gauge fell like a rock. I thought we could stop about 30 miles north of Casper to top off the tank. We reached that point and there was no civilization in sight. It was another 26 miles to Kaycee and we didn't know if there was a station there or not. Fortunately there was one station - $4.15 a gallon - but I was glad to see it.

We will stay in Buffalo 2 nights. We have a nice campsite at Deer Park Campgrounds. Lots of trees and open space. Spring is just taking hold here. Lots of trees are not leafed out, and those that are still are that pale green of early spring. We plan to take a day trip tomorrow to Devil's Tower about 100 miles east of here. We will recuperate and get ready for the final drive to Great Falls on Sunday. It is a 380 mile drive so that will be a long day too. The pictures are of a snow fence along the interstate. There are miles and miles of snow fence about 100 yds. off the road to keep snow from piling up on the highway. Another picture is the landscape of a lot of eastern Wyoming. It is rolling grassland for as far as you can see. Sort of reminds me of west Texas and the panhandle. The Rocky Mts. are in the distance. The third picture is of our rig and campsite last night in Loveland. It is 65 degrees with a breeze out of the WNW here tonight. Expected to get down into the 40's tonight. We will probably sleep with the windows open for at least part of the night. Had to run the furnace for a while this morning. A little chilly as I sit at a picnic table writing this. The fire is about ready for steaks and burgers - for tonight and tomorrow night.

Lucy is behaving herself. She is a good traveler - plays, sleeps, eats, repeats. What a life!! I'll post again tomorrow after Devil's Tower. Til then - Happy Trails!
